The second half didn't drag for me, but I do see how it might - it's a different feel for sure when he stays in the same environment.Bob Turnbullhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02243657105760780425noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8977893001776125260.post-80408007449750644332013-01-01T16:40:26.692-05:002013-01-01T16:40:26.692-05:00Ivan, I would LOVE to see Barry Lyndon on the big ...Ivan, I would LOVE to see Barry Lyndon on the big screen. Just the thought of some of those shots and the candlelit scenes...I'm sure Zhivago would have been amazing for the train shots, ice house and some other sections, but much of it feels a bit claustrophobic. I don't think that dream like state would follow...I'm also a bit mystified at its reputation as a great love story - I never felt that aspect of it.

Rant anytime! I enjoyed it more than I expected, especially in the first half. The second dragged for me when everything goes wrong for Barry. I haven't seen Dr. Zhivago, but I still enjoyed the way you rolled them together in one big review. Nice job!Danhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12351431577484530230noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8977893001776125260.post-48838410275641343952012-12-30T14:07:31.442-05:002012-12-30T14:07:31.442-05:00Nice write-up! Zhivago is one of those "classics" that I keep thinking I should see, since it is David Lean, but then I read something like your write-up and I figure there are other films more germane to my interests.

But considering your statement about how long it took you to get around to Barry Lyndon, I thought, "Ah, if he'd only had the chance to see it in a theater": the flick is wonderfully immersive in a hardtop, like an opium dream--so damn beautiful, it's glorious. And I wonder if Dr. Z is the same way? The movie sounds like an absolute snoozer, but in an old-school movie palace back in the day? The visuals sound like they'd entertain the solitary viewer, and I bet it was THE date movie, with lots of necking in the balcony.
Thanks for letting me rant/Happy New Year!
--IvanIvanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16443946766217092846noreply@blogger.com
